Chelation therapy is a recognized treatment for heavy metal (such as lead or mercury) poisoning. Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, or EDTA, when injected into the blood, binds the metals so they can be easily removed from the body in the urine. EDTA chelation therapy is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for lead and heavy metal poisoning.
